Can we help you deliver an exhibition?

In which we explain the principles under which our exhibition support is being offered...

Following from Louise Atkinson’s great talk at last month’s Talk&Social I wanted to put into written words some of the things that were said at that event.

Exposure Leeds has several remits, one of which is to promote the sharing and display of photographic imagery. In order to do this we have agreed that some of our funds can be used towards expenses for putting exhibitions together. We are also building up contacts with exhibition opportunities – spaces that work can effectively be displayed in – in and around Leeds City Centre.

We are not going to be prescriptive about what this work should be or do but we do have some guidance:

  • Any exhibition must feature the work of at least three artists/photographers/imagemakers
  • All work funded must have photography as part of it’s make up
  • New and previously un-exhibited work is favoured
  • You must bring enthusiasm, passion and drive to the project.
  • Projects relevant to the local communities will probably be more appealing to us.
  • Community-related projects will get priority.
However we will, wherever possible aim to:
  • Help you fund the project
  • Help you find a location
  • Help you market it
  • Put you in touch with people who can help make it a success
We cannot provide funding for many exhibitions, and we are not looking to host our own exhibitions in the immediate future. But we would like to see more of our members’ work on public display.
Note: an ‘exhibition’ doesn’t have to be work hung on a wall; we will consider creative ideas as well as the traditional approaches – you could be distributing work on playing cards in coffee shops or printed onto beer mats in pubs, you could be projecting your work onto a public building or creating a walking gallery for Light Night or Saturday shoppers.
Have you an idea – then approach any of the three directors in writing or person and tell us what you’re thinking of. We won’t influence what you do (unless you ask for our personal opinion) but we will consider your ideas and come back to you with any ways in which we can help.
